Marie-Elena Meagher, née Mazzuca, passed away on July 15, 2025 at the age of 78, beloved wife of the late Philip John; cherished mother of Paul (Linda) and Alaina (Brian) Papacek; loving grandma of Elena, Brett, Bella, Joseph, and Thomas; dear sister of Pamela (Arthur) Palenscar and the late Salvatore (Margaret) Mazzuca; dearest cousin and aunt to many.

A dedicated educator, Marie-Elena began her teaching career at St. John Chrysostom, where she taught 8th grade Social Studies from 1969 to 1976. She later taught Language Arts as a substitute for grades 6 through 8 at St. Monica's School from 1986 to 1988. Her deep passion for education led her to Mannheim District 83, where she served as a respected substitute teacher across all schools, with a focus on Special Education and junior high students.

She earned her Master's degree in Reading from Concordia University and went on to teach 7th grade Reading at Mannheim Middle School in 1992. The following year, she transitioned to teaching Social Studies and remained a beloved member of the school community until her retirement in 2012. Known for her warmth, wisdom, and commitment to student growth, she often taught in a "looping" model, staying with her students through both 7th and 8th grades.

In 1993, she became a presenter for the Association of Illinois Middle Schools (AIMS), where she shared her expertise through workshops focused on helping students with ADD achieve academic success.

Beyond the classroom, Marie-Elena led a vibrant life. She worked part-time as a travel agent, a role that aligned perfectly with her passion for travel. She loved exploring new places and cultures, always bringing back stories and inspiration. A proud and loyal Chicago Bears fan, she never missed a game and wore her team colors with pride. But above all, Marie-Elena found her greatest joy in caring for and spending time with her family, whom she loved deeply and unconditionally.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Elms Funeral Home, 7600 W. Grand Ave. (turn north at 76th Ave.), Elmwood Park. Funeral prayers will begin Monday, July 21, 2025, at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, proceeding to St. Vincent Ferrer Church for Mass at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
