M. Joan Slattery passed away peacefully on February 10, 2023. Born on March 24, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she was the eldest daughter of Charles and Agnes Coghlan.
As a young woman working with the Young Christian Workers, she met her future husband W. Donald Slattery. They were married on February 12, 1953.
Joan and Don had five children: Michael (Lynn), Susan (Gary), Charles (Ellen), Patrick (Cherise), and Eileen (Michael). Joan was "Nana" to her grandchildren: Adira (Fen), AmandaEve (Brendan), Brian (Talya), David, Kevin (Katie), Killoran (David), Nick (Irene), Rachel S., Taylor, Tim (Sara), Casey (Stacey), and Rachel C. Joan is a great-grandmother to Taran, Rhiannon, Christopher, John, Clara, and Lucas.
She will be remembered by her family for her kindness, her calm, and her easy-going manner. Joan volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and later worked at the Sears Customer Service department for many years. All of her life, Joan was an avid reader, loved to swim, and loved to bake pies and cakes for her family. She passed these loves onto her children.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband Don, son Charles, and sister Mary.
Visitation, Friday, from 10 a.m. until time of Funeral Prayers, 11:15 a.m., at The Elms Funeral Home 7600 W. Grand Ave. (Turn north at 76th Ave.) Elmwood Park to St. Celestine Church, Mass 12 p.m. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
