It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leonel Monzon, who transitioned to eternal rest on Thursday April 24th, 2025, at the age of 78. Born in Guatemala on July 25th, 1946, to Gerardo and Maria, Leonel lived a life marked by resilience, dedication, and unwavering optimism.

In 1984, Leonel bravely immigrated to Chicago, seeking a future brimming with greater opportunities for himself and his family. He poured his energy into his work as a skilled commercial and residential welder, contributing his craftsmanship to the fabric of his new community.

Throughout his 78 years, Leonel faced numerous adversities with remarkable courage and inner strength. He navigated a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in the mid-1990s with fortitude. In 2018, he confronted non-Hodgkin's lymphoma head-on, emerging victorious after a challenging battle in 2019. Even when faced with liver disease in 2023, Leonel met each challenge with unwavering faith and an unyielding positive spirit, always choosing to see the bright side and press forward.

Beyond his work and his battles, Leonel found great joy in the world of sports. He was a passionate fan of el futbol, his beloved soccer, and he cheered with equal enthusiasm for the Chicago Cubs. Whether watching live or on television, he was a dedicated supporter. His enthusiasm extended to his grandchildren, whom he proudly supported at their sporting events, celebrating their victories and offering comfort with a shared scoop of ice cream after losses.

Leonel was known and loved by many names: Dad, brother, Abuelo, and Leo. Regardless of how you knew him, his absence will be deeply felt by all who were touched by his life.

He is lovingly survived by his children, Christian (Jackie), Norlin, and Vilma; former spouse, Mirtha; his brother, Jose (Susana); his cherished grandchildren, Mason and Sofia; his step-grandchildren, William and Alicia (Vanesa); and his great-grandchild, Jaida.

Though he is no longer with us, Leonel's spirit of perseverance, his unwavering optimism, and his deep love for his family will continue to inspire those who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of strength and a reminder to always look for the bright side, no matter the challenges life may bring.
