A graduate of Kelvyn Park High School, Kathryn Harrington Zepf, age 92, earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1981 from Northeastern University while working full time and raising four children. After moving to River Grove from Chicago in 1954, Katie grew concerned about the nearby railroad tracks which provided an attractive nuisance to the many children on the block. Her successful letters to the Milwaukee Road to build a fence to prevent the children playing on the tracks provided peace of mind and safety to the families on that block. Her love of numbers, books, and opera was evident throughout her life. An accountant by training she headed the accounting department of Westlake Hospital. Later, after retiring from Zahn Drugs as head of the Accounts Payable department, she volunteered at Rhodes School, reading to the school children. That experience attuned her to the need of a library in River Grove. As president of the Friends of the River Grove Library, Katie raised funds for the new library and arranged topical speakers to attract residents to the opportunities and benefits of the new library. Her mastery of accounting was appreciated when she volunteered as treasurer to both the River Grove Seniors Club and Leyden United Seniors for many years. She thoroughly enjoyed her annual subscription to the Lyric Opera and opera music could often be heard swelling from her home. After retiring, along with volunteering to help others, she enjoyed globe trotting with her sister, Marie Schreiber, and daughters. Kathryn was the beloved wife of the late Frank for 57 years. She was the best mother on earth to her children Betsy (Greene Mound), Chuck, Frank E., and Peggy (Cassidy). Her children-in-law cherish her memory – Michael Mound, Janet Zepf, and Fred Cassidy. She was the loving grandmother of Erin Estrada and Heather Zepf.
