IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Andrew S.
Zdunek
November 7, 1939 – December 30, 2022
On December 30, 2022, Andrew S. Zdunek passed away at the Marshfield Medical Center Hospital in
Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He was 83.
Andy was born Nov. 7, 1939 to Mary and Andrew Zdunek in Chicago, Illinois. Following his parent's values, he was both independent and determined to succeed in life, recognizing that a good education and work ethic would accomplish those goals. He began his employment history at a very young age as a golf caddy in order to earn the tuition for Weber High School, a prestigious Catholic Academy of that era. His caddying once included assisting golf legend, Ben Hogan, and that gave Andy a great appreciation for a game he actively played the rest of his life. He graduated from Weber in 1957 and later continued his education at Loyola University Chicago.
Following High School, Andy took a job for the Post Office in Edgebrook, Illinois, and also joined the Air Force reserve for a total of eight years - two years in active duty as a medic stateside. It was while serving, he developed an interest in cryptograms and other "brain" puzzles such as crosswords and later, sudokus. He always "got" them, but once shared that a fellow serviceman gave him a trick to use in solving those cryptograms. Andy never did reveal that "secret".
In his late 20s, Andy acquired a position at the LaSalle Bank. It was there he met Joan Abruscato, his future wife. They were married September 2, 1967. Unfortunately, the bank did not allow dating or marriage among employees. So, Andy moved to the Evanston National Bank which later merged with Mid-City Bank. By the 1980s, he was a Vice President. He ended his career at age 70 with MB Financial where he specialized in trust funds and all aspects pertaining to their management.
Although Andy and Joan never had children, they shared many interests – travel to exotic places (Antigua, Martinique, Hawaii), a love of Northern Wisconsin, Louisiana and Alabama, and entertaining both at their home in Lincolnwood and their second home in St. Germaine. Their friends, family, and neighbors truly mattered to them.
After Joan's passing, Andy continued to visit Wisconsin, dividing his time between family in Beaver Dam and Minocqua. He attended almost every holiday gathering, party, wedding, and golf outing. He had fun at the casino, doing the family football pools, playing the Easter bunny, and playing board games and cards. He loved going out to Wisconsin supper clubs and fish frys. His presence will be
sorely missed.
In addition to his wife, Andy was preceded in death by his sister, Joan (James) Leon. He is survived by his sister Claudia (Gerald) Cygan, three nieces, Denise Cygan, Kathy Steffan, Marijo Rapp, six nephews, James Cygan, Robert Abruscato, John Abruscato, Joseph Abruscato,
David Rogers, and Brent Rogers.
